Female genital cutting, also known as female genital mutilation, female circumcision or female genital mutilation/cutting, refers to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs whether for cultural, religious or other non-therapeutic reasons. It is practiced throughout the world, with the practice concentrated most heavily in Africa.

| umm... so circumcision of a male removes a small piece of skin (while he is an infant and won't remeber anything, or is an adult under anaesthetic) Removing the clitoris is the medical and biological equivalent of removing the entire penis, then the vagina is sewn shut, leaving only enough space for urine and blood to drip out. Many girls die in this procedure because the 'cutters' have no real medical education and often the girls bleed to death or die soon after from infection (razor blades are used on multiple 'patients' and in some places the only disinfectant measure available is a rag soaked in water.) The vagina is then cut open again on her wedding night. This procedure cannot be done on infants,thus it is girls as young as 3-4 and as old as 13-14 (any older and they would not be socially acceptable for marriage.) Now I don't think that male circumcision is right or even necessary, but calling them "equivalent" is like calling a sliced artery a paper cut. |
