War → WWII → Zoja Kosmodemjanskaja
Zoja Anatolievna Kosmodemjanskaja ("Tanja") (13.09.1923 - 29.11.1941) - Soviet partisan and hero of World War 2. She was captured and hanged by German Nazi in Petrischevo village. Her corpse was left on the gallow for a whole week. Then German Nazi soldiers stabbed her frozen corpse with byonets just for "fun". Here you can see the stabbing wounds on her left breast.
Thank you for visiting CharonBoat.com! Take time to appreciate life!
| She would look much better with her hands tied behind her back.|
|I read that Zoya was left on the gallows not for a week but over a month (Nov 29 to Jan 1). Her frozen body was left up until drunken soldiers on New Years cut it down and struck her breast with their bayonets. Before her execution she was savagely beaten during a lengthy interrogation. Still unwilling to talk she was marched up and down through the snow barefoot and stripped to her undergarments the night before her death. She responded by giving a defiant speech before her hanging, which through the vagaries of fate elevated her from another nameless heroine to a rallying cry for her homeland. A newspaper article chronicled the brave death of a girl who refused to give the Nazis even her real name, calling herself Tanya after a famous partisan from the Russian Revolution. Her courageous story combined with these captured pictures led the Soviet government to use her as a powerful propaganda symbol to turn the tide of the war in the East.|
