Medical → Lobotomy

A lobotomy is a neurosurgical procedure, a form of psychosurgery, also known as a leukotomy. Lobotomies were used mainly from the 1930s to 1950s to treat a wide range of severe mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, clinical depression, and various anxiety disorders.

(continuation of previous post)
but brain "surgery" was more dangerous (some people actually died from it) and was was no more effective than ECT or IST.

Worse, the prevailing theory behind lobotomy was strictly dumb-dumb knucklehead. The goofball that invented it sincerely believed--with no evidence whatsoever--that insanity is caused by defective wiring in specific brain centers, rather than chemical imbalances or issues in early childhood.

This actually worked--temporarily. It worked by the same principle as ECT. Centuries ago it was discovered that crazy people who were traumatized would temporarily regain their sanity. The underlying theory was that the id would surrender control to the ego so that sanity could return, temporarily, to preserve existence in an emergency.

So, in 1937 psychoanalysts figured they could fool the id into thinking it was being killed by administering a safe trauma. At first they used insuline shock therapy to mimic trauma. By 1938, though, it was decided that electric shock therapy was safer and at least as effective.

The exact same theory easily applied to frontal lobotomy practice,

concerning the last photo
On the last photo -- I am fairly certain this is fake. It looks staged. Plus, if entry was made through the orbital sockets, as the hemmoraging suggests, where is the blood on her forehead coming from? Furthermore, she is wearing makeup, and obviously not in postoperative care (and... a nose ring..?) The resolution suggests it is a digital photo, and the proceadure is nowdays illegal.
