War → WWII → Victim of atomic bombing of Hiroshima
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear attacks during World War II against the Empire of Japan by the United States of America under US President Harry S. Truman. On August 6, 1945, the first choice target, Hiroshima, was having clear weather. At 8:15 a.m. (local time), the Enola Gay's door sprang open and dropped "Little Boy." The bomb exploded 1,900 feet above the city and only missed the target, the Aioi Bridge, by approximately 800 feet. Staff Sergeant George Caron, the tail gunner, described what he saw: "The mushroom cloud itself was a spectacular sight, a bubbling mass of purple-gray smoke and you could see it had a red core in it and everything was burning inside... It looked like lava or molasses covering a whole city..." The cloud is estimated to have reached a height of 40,000 feet.

Hiroshima's population has been estimated at 350,000; approximately 70,000 died immediately from the explosion and another 70,000 died from radiation within five years. A survivor described the damage to people: "The appearance of people was... well, they all had skin blackened by burns... They had no hair because their hair was burned, and at a glance you couldn't tell whether you were looking at them from in front or in back... They held their arms bent [forward] like this... and their skin - not only on their hands, but on their faces and bodies too - hung down... If there had been only one or two such people... perhaps I would not have had such a strong impression. But wherever I walked I met these people... Many of them died along the road - I can still picture them in my mind -- like walking ghosts..."

The person titled "No Excuse" has clearly never read a history book about Japan during WW2. Even a brief knowledge of the country at that time will reveal that Japan was not ready to capitulate, and in fact, prepared to to fight to the last man, woman, and child as evidenced by POWs accounts of civilians (mostly women and children) being drilled in hand to hand combat and use of a weapon in August of 1945. The U.S.'s reluctance to kill civilians was exploited by Japan to their advantage and they had every opportunity to ease the suffering of their people and they didn't; why? Because Hirohito was not being allowed to stay in power (one main reason). NO EXCUSE. |

That's just POWs. I didn't even reference the Rape of Nanking. It's hard to feel bad for an imperialist country raised to believe it was genetically superior to every other race and routinely practiced genocide. |

..."Thousands of other POWs were beaten, burned, stabbed, or clubbed to death, shot, beheaded, killed during medical experiments, or eaten alive in ritual acts of cannibalism. And as a result of being fed grossly inadequate and befouled food and water, thousands more died of starvation and easily preventable diseases. In accordance with the kill-all order, the Japanese massacred all 5,000 Korean captives on Tinian, all of the POWs on Ballale, Wake, and Tarawa, and all but 11 POWs at Palawan. They were evidently about to murder all the other POWs and civilian internees in their custody when the atomic bomb brought their empire crashing down." |

People critical over the appalling Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings need to truly understand the narrative that lead to this before commenting. Quoted from "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand: "In its ramapage over the east, Japan had brought atrocity and death on a scale that staggers the imagination. In the midst of it were the prisoners of war. Japan held some 132,000 POWs from America, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Holland, and Australia. Of those, nearly 36,000 died, more than one in every four. American fared particularly badly; of the 34,648 Americans held by Japan, 12,935 - more than 37% - died. By comparison, ONLY 1 PERCENT OF AMERICANS HELD BY THE NAZIS AND ITALIANS DIED. Japan murdered thousands of POWs on death marches, and worked thousands of other to death in slavery, including some 16,000 POWs who died alongside as many as 100,000 Asian laborers forced to build the Burma-Siam Railway... |

They could have told them that they were going to drop the bomb. Then again dropping the bomb saved more American soldiers lives. |
